Our emblem
THE SCHOOL EMBLEM of the Ashkenazium is based on a silver ḥoshen or Torah shield from the town of Kisvárda (circa 1870) which was acquired by the Hungarian Jewish Museum adjoining the Dohány synagogue. The style is typical Ashkenazi Retro-Renaissance. With the Two Tablets of the Covenant in the centre flanked by Corinthian columns and housed in a Baroque escutcheon, the ḥoshen serves an an apt symbol for the Ashkenazi reality of “Jacob’s Torah in the tents of Esau.”
