This course will be a discussion about the matriarchs and patriarchs in the Book of Genesis. Discussion in particular is the aim of this course because the figures and mother and father are inherently so profoundly intimate that, in the final analysis, there is no authority about what embodies these types. Each individual sees his or her own mother and father in the reflective aspeklaria of Sarah and Abraham, Rebecca and Isaac, Leah, Rachel and Jacob. In order to situate the discussion of Genesis in the unavoidable Western context of the discussion, we will begin with an examination of mother figures and father figures in Attic Tragedy, as well as in psychoanalysis.
