The sefer “Gevurot Hashem” or “The Mighty Feats of the LORD” by Rabbi Yehuda Loew ben Bezalel aka the Maharal of Prague appeared in print in 1582. The book takes its title from the verse “Yours is the greatness and the might and the glory …” (I Chronicles 29:11). The book deals with the Exodus from Egypt in its various details, its narrative preparations in Genesis, and its central significance for Jewish time. The Maharal develops a dialectical concept of Jewish history, in which the rise of Israel is understood in terms of the fall of Egypt, and the escape for historical dialect by virtue of the “might of the LORD.” The text will be read in English translation, with the Hebrew original at hand, and with constant reference to the Book of Exodus and its commentaries.
